Asleep

Sometimes I fall asleep

in the midst of my life.

I wonder where God has gone

and why I am left alone.

Where is God, I think.

and why can’t I find my way?

I feel the darkness closing in on me,

and God is nowhere to be found.

When I finally awake,

I see that God has not gone away.

My awareness had been dimmed,

but only for the moment.

Surely God is always present,

and I have been sleeping.

When I awake I will see again

and know this is a holy place.

As I see the gate of heaven,

and I step into the house of God,

the light shines into the darkness

and I can see, and I can see.

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
